Pulaski Jail Inmates Begin Work on Vegetables Gardens

PulaskiGardenInmates at the Pulaski County Jail started work this week to help supplement their diet and improve the quality of their meals.

This is the second year for a garden run by the Pulaski County Jail. The crops are grown at the site of the former Pleasant View Rest Home, the produce from which is used as part of meals served at the jail.

Varieties include potatoes, green beans, peppers, onions, lettuce, cabbage, tomatoes, cucumbers, and watermelons. Sometimes hundreds of pounds of each variety are produced according to the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department.

Apart from improving the quality of the food, the jail experiences a cost savings for their meal plans each year due to the growth of the garden. This year’s crops are supposed to produce more food than the previous year.

Also this year, a Winamac-based Eagle Scout planted pear, apple, and peach trees. It will be several years before they production fruit, but is expected to add responsibility to the inmates working the gardens.
