Knox Mayor Elaborates on Independence Day Celebration Plans

A full day of activities is planned in downtown Knox on Saturday, July 2nd prior to the city’s annual fireworks display. It will take place at Wythogan Park this year instead of at the Starke County Airport. Festivities will get underway with a parade. Knox Mayor Dennis Estok says it’s not too early to make plans to be part of it.”

“If you plan on being in the parade with a float, give us a call. We’ll send an application out,” Estok said during an appearance last week on WKVI. “I’d rather get it out of the way now than at the last minute, which is kind of common. They call at the last day and say ‘hey, can I still get in.’ So if there’s anybody out there that plans on being in the parade, please contact my office.”

Fun Day in the Park will follow the parade. Estok says it will feature a DJ and more.

“The corn hole tournament should draw a lot of interest because we’ve actually got a company that is sponsoring that. First prize is $500, second prize is $250 and third prize is $100, so I think that’s going to draw a lot. We’ve got the burnout contest that we’re bringing back down in the park, which is always a great big draw. Horseshoe tournament, donut eating contest, we’ve got pro wrestling with the Wrestling King. We’ve also got a magic show for the kids.”

Estok says parking will be available in the park for 200 or so cars. Shuttles will also be offered.

“We’re going to pick people up downtown. We’ll have our different spots that if you don’t want to walk or cannot walk we will have a shuttle, but I also recommend people to bring a lawn chair or something like that. In the park you might have to find a good spot or something like that, because by the testing we did find out there is a lot of good spots right there in the park that you’ll be able to see them.”

The Knox fireworks show is scheduled to start at 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 2nd.
