Ash trees will soon be removed from the Winamac Town Park. The town council last week voted to award the quote for their removal to TD’s Tree Service of Knox.

The project had been divided into two separate bids, to speed up the process and make sure the hazardous trees are gone before the start of summer events in the park. Potential contractors were given until June 10 to complete the work.

However, Winamac Town Manager Brad Zellers told the council that TD’s Tree Service said it could do both parts of the project in just five days. “They would like to take the logs out to the woods and put them off to the side where people could utilize it for firewood or whatever,” he said. TD’s bid also includes the removal of all wood and debris, and grinding the stumps level with the ground.

This is a bit different from Park Manager Dave DeLorenzo’s original proposal to have the trees dropped and then allow the public to cut them up and remove the wood in exchange for a fee. The council was concerned about the liability issues that would pose.

TD’s Tree Service submitted the lowest bid, charging $20,000 for the entire tree removal project.
