EMA Officials Offer Severe Weather Tips

Severe weather is possible across much of Indiana this afternoon and evening. The northern third of the state is at a moderate risk for severe weather, according to the National Weather Service. The main threats are damaging winds, large hail, heavy rain and tornadoes.

We will bring you the very latest weather developments throughout the day on the air, online and via social media. Emergency management officials recommend turning up the volume on cell phone notifications so you don’t miss any weather alerts. Also be sure to keep electronic devices fully charged in case of a power outage.

Know where to take shelter in the event of severe weather. A basement or storm shelter is best, but if neither are available a first floor interior room without windows is also an option. Occupants of mobile homes should seek shelter elsewhere, as they are susceptible to wind damage. If you are in your car when a storm hits, take shelter if possible in a dry ditch.

Do not walk or drive through any flooded areas. Roadways may be washed out underneath. Also it only takes six inches of fast-moving flood water to knock over an adult and only two feet to move a vehicle. If a road is closed, find another route.

Follow the directions of public safety officials – that includes evacuation orders, road closures or requests to stay at home or stay away from certain areas; public safety officials give orders for public well-being. Heed their advice.

Weather conditions can change quickly, so it’s important to stay up-to-date on current weather conditions, prepare for the possibility of severe weather and exercise caution.
