The Town of Culver had to jump through a few hoops prior to being able to spend money received through the state for infrastructure improvements.

During Tuesday’s Culver Town Council meeting, an ordinance was considered to appropriate the funds prior to beginning construction work.

Earlier this year, the state of Indiana provided funds to local units of government through a special Local Option Income Tax distribution. Those monies were used by governments across the state as the matching portion for the Community Crossings grant.

Funds through the Community Crossings grant were awarded to cities and counties across the state, allowing major infrastructure projects to commence based on applications, and a host of other requirements being considered by INDOT.

Culver was awarded $99-thousand through the initial LOIT distribution this year, earmarking the money for use as a matching share of Community Crossings dollars. In total, Culver received another $76-thousand in grant funds to complete additional road and infrastructure work.

Specifically, the Town of Culver is planning to complete work to pave south Main Street between Madison and Davis streets. The town accepted a bid at a cost of $146-thousand at the end of August.

Paving work is also possibly slated for Obispo Street from Davis to Batabano streets, though town officials said they’re choosing to focus on Main Street during Tuesday’s discussion for reasons that remain unclear. Bids were considered and approved at $100-thousand for that project in August.

The Town has previously given themselves permission to spend the funds, but there were more requirements to access the money. The Town Council was first required to appropriate the funds prior to being able to access them from the state for construction work.

Following a public hearing on the matter Tuesday night, the Culver Town Council approved the ordinance unanimously.
