The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department is investigating following a fatal crash in LaPorte County on Saturday evening.

The incident occurred in the area of U.S. 6 and U.S. 421 just south of the community of Westville around 5:30 p.m. That’s when officers say a Plymouth Voyager mini-van, being driven by 35-year-old Karina Hernandez allegedly did not obey a stop sign.

The van was carrying three children, all minors.

An investigation revealed that the van was traveling West on U.S. 6 when it traveled through a stop sign. A motorcycle, being driven by 62-year-old Joseph Filippini was traveling north on U.S. 421 when he allegedly struck the side of the van.

He was ejected from his motorcycle and transported to the hospital with critical injuries. Filippini was pronounced dead a short time later.

Hernandez was cited for disregarding a stop sign. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the accident.
