Pulaski County Road 250 North could use a posted speed limit. That’s what two residents told the county commissioners Monday.

James and Christine Lecas said the stretch of road between Arens Field and the Tippecanoe River bridge sees a dangerous mix of cars, trucks, and farm equipment. On top of that, they say there are a number of driveways and intersections in a place where hills and curves in the road can make visibility difficult.

Sheriff Jeff Richwine said he believes the speed limit is 55 miles per hour on county roads, unless a lower limit is posted. Commissioner Larry Brady pointed out that residents could petition the county to lower it. “Four or five decades ago, we had the Woodlawn Addition, where we petitioned the commissioners to lower it down to 30 miles per hour, but that was a residential neighborhood,” Brady said. “As regards to that stretch where you’re at, it’s a main thoroughfare for getting to Monterey and to the other side of the Tippecanoe River.”

However, it was also noted that thoroughfare is becoming more residential, with several homes being built there over the years. Brady said the commissioners will ask the Pulaski County Highway Department to contact the Indiana Local Technical Assistance Program. “Maybe they can do a survey of what’s going on, a traffic count, types of vehicles, etc.,” Brady said, “to help provide us the information that we made need that could help maybe assist you with a petition to reduce the speed limit or advise you have some dangerous curves, that they do need to reduce it down.”

Additionally, Richwine offered to include police patrols in the area.
