Star City Volunteer Firefighter Killed in Motorcycle Crash

A young volunteer firefighter from Star City is dead following a Saturday motorcycle crash investigators from the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department believe was caused by a deer.

It happened near County Roads 400 east and 675 South in Star City, according to the incident report. Investigators say 26-year-old Michael Shorter was operating a 2011 Harley-Davidson Super Glide motorcycle when a deer entered the roadway. Shorter’s 28-year-old wife, Brandi, was on the back of the bike. Neither was wearing helmets, and both were thrown about 75 yards, according to the report.

Michael was taken immediately to Pulaski Memorial Hospital due to his life-threatening injuries. From there he was airlifted to South Bend Memorial Hospital, where he later died.

Brandi was also taken to PMH and later flown to South Bend. She is still hospitalized but is expected to make a full recovery. She is pregnant with the couple’s first child, according to family members.
