Debate Over TV Ads Expected to Resume in Pulaski County

Pulaski County Commissioners: Bud Krohn Jr., Jerry Locke, Kenny Becker

The Pulaski County Commissioners are expected to revisit a television advertising proposal to promote the county’s recreational amenities when they meet today. During their most recent meeting, the commissioners expressed skepticism at the effectiveness of advertising on cable television in the Chicago market and instead suggested the CDC use the internet to promote the county.

CDC Executive Director Nathan P. Origer was not in attendance, as he was of the understanding the matter had been tabled until today’s meeting. In a letter to the commissioners he says he’s “baffled and troubled beyond comprehension” by the discussion. He has a standing appointment with the commissioners during the second meeting of each month. They were switched from evenings to days at the start of the year to accommodate county employees and office-holders with business before the council.

Commissioner Bud Krohn, Jr. has questioned the source of the advertising money and suggested some local businesses contribute toward the expense. County attorney Kevin Tankersley and others attempted to explain the CDC budget includes money for advertising and promotion.

Origer says last year’s television advertising campaign brought more visitors to the county, which in turn benefitted local businesses. Last year commercials aired during the Academy of Country Music Awards. This year’s proposed ad buy would have the commercials running more frequently on additional stations, based on demographic information identifying potential visitors.

Today’s Pulaski County Commissioners meeting starts at 8 a.m. EST at the courthouse.
