Stay Safe while Celebrating Super Bowl

Police around Indiana are reminding Hoosiers not to drink and drive over the Super Bowl weekend. Several local law enforcement agencies, including the LaPorte Police Department, are teaming up with the Governor’s Council on Impaired & Dangerous Driving and the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute to help prevent accidents and deaths resulting from impaired driving.

They say it’s important to plan a safe way home before you start celebrating. Police recommend using a taxi or ridesharing service or designating a driver. They also say if someone you know is about to drive impaired, take their keys and help arrange for them to get home safely, and if you see a drunk driver on the road, call 911.

Last year, there were 13 injuries as a result of alcohol-related crashes over Super Bowl weekend. Officials with the Governor’s Council on Impaired & Dangerous Driving note that alcohol-related crashes decreased in 2016 from the year before and improvement was seen in other categories, as well. But they say that even one crash or injury that could have been prevented is too many.
