Investigation into Winamac Fire Cause Concluded

The cause of Saturday’s fire that destroyed a downtown Winamac building and heavily damaged two other structures is officially undetermined. Fire Chief Brian Guzman contacted investigator from the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office to look into the cause and origin of the blaze.

The Winamac Volunteer Fire Department responded around 9 a.m. Saturday to 109 South Logan Street and spotted black smoke billowing from the building owned by Jerry Freeman.

Firefighters from Star City, Francesville, Kewanna, Monterey, Bass Lake, Knox, Buffalo and North Judson assisted in fighting the fire. Guzman says buildings on Main Street occupied by CPA Sue Peppers and attorney John Kocher sustained smoke damage.

One firefighter was treated and released at Pulaski Memorial Hospital for a minor injury. The fire departments cleared the scene around 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
