Knox Doesn’t Qualify for Grant for Fire Station Expansion

The City of Knox did not qualify for a grant to make improvements to the south side fire station based on results of a recently completed income survey. Firefighters and city officials went door-to-door for several weeks to gather data from residents. Mayor Dennis Estok notes data from Center and part of Jackson Townships was also included since the fire department serves those areas.

The city wants to add more bays to the fire station on South Heaton Street, including one to house the historic 1935 Studebaker fire engine. Plans also call for the installation of showers and construction of a connector between the conference room and the storage and equipment area.

Mayor Dennis Estok says the project carries a total price tag of about $500,000. He recently told the city council he would like to do the work a little bit at a time.
