Planning Continues for Winamac’s Veterans Memorial Park

The Winamac Park Board continues to tweak its plans for Veterans Memorial Park. Plans call for the addition of a decorative archway that says “Veterans Memorial Park,” along with two benches donated by the VFW and American Legion.

During last week’s meeting, Park Board President Courtney Poor said discussions are underway to combine the projects. “We’re exploring the possibility of incorporating the benches that have been discussed by the two town veteran organizations, actually incorporating those into the archway structure itself, so that they would be under cover, out of the weather,” he said. “We’re going to see what the drawings show, and I’ll be presenting something after that comes back to me.” Poor added that the park board may seek fundraising help from its advisory council.

At the same time, some military memorabilia may be coming Veterans Memorial Park in the coming years. The American Legion is asking the park board if it would be interested in placing its cannon in the park, if and when the time comes that the American Legion no longer has space to display it.

Poor said it’s worth looking into. “We don’t want to jam too many things into that small park, but it would be appropriate, I think,” he said. “So let’s take that under advisement.”

The park board hopes to make a decision at its next meeting.
