Avoid Common Errors When Filing Income Tax Returns

The income tax filing deadline is less than two weeks away. Many taxpayers may be rushing to complete paperwork to make the filing deadline which can lead to common errors.

The Internal Revenue Service urges taxpayers to slow down and take time to fill out required forms correctly. If forms are not completed correctly, it will likely take the IRS more time to process the paperwork. These are the 9 tax forms you need to know.

Avoid many common errors by filing electronically. IRS e-file is the most accurate way to file a tax return and many taxpayers can use this software at no cost. IRS Free File does all of the calculations and prompts taxpayers for missing information. However, check for number input errors. Click here for the IRS Free File link.

Those filing by paper should check irs.gov for tax form instructions for the proper mailing address to avoid delays.

When entering information on tax forms, take the time to double check the accuracy of the information provided and make sure it is legible, including Social Security numbers.

Requesting direct deposit into one or several accounts can be convenient, but entering the wrong numbers can result in a delay. Make sure the financial institution routing and account numbers entered are accurate.

Sign and date the forms as necessary and attach all required forms. Keep a copy of the return for your records.

A filing extension can be requested for those taxpayers who cannot meet the April 18 deadline. Filing an extension can be done using Free File or Form 4868.
