Carrying Our Community’s Cross Returns to Starke County Tomorrow

An Easter weekend event seeks to raise awareness of the positive resources available to Starke County residents.

Carrying Our Community’s Cross will once again step off from the Starke County Courthouse tomorrow morning at 8:00 for a 13.7-mile journey to Norwayne Field in North Judson. “We’ll go through Main in Knox through town, hit the county roads,” says organizer Jerry Bacon. “We’ll stop at Toto and kind of have a little pit stop there, and then we take off all the way to Norwayne Field.”

Bacon says the group will carry a wooden cross, as well as signs recognizing some of the county’s nonprofit organizations. “If there’s anybody that sees this, sees a sign, and you know what, there’s help out there,” he says. “And that’s the thing we want you to know. There’s people that care about you, and you don’t have to do this alone. We care, and we care about one another. That’s what makes us a great county.”

He says that while the event is filled with religious symbolism, it’s not specifically a church event. “It’s just a community event,” Bacon says. “I look at like the Christmas tree lighting in Judson, the way the mayor’s done the park with the water stuff and all the things that’s going on there to bring unity. This is just another example of that, and the greatest thing is it’s free. We’re not asking for money. We’re not trying to raise funds. It’s just something to come out, have a good time. Bring your family. It is a great opportunity.”

Bacon adds that if someone’s not able to walk the entire route, transportation will be available. Food will be provided. For more information, call Bacon at 574-806-2440.
