Knox Board of Works Waives Fees for Habitat for Humanity Project

This vacant lot at the corner of Prettyman and Delaware Streets in Knox will be the site of the next Starke-Pulaski Habitat for Humanity house.

Starke-Pulaski Habitat for Humanity officials hope to break ground on their home site in Knox within the next month. Knox Mayor Dennis Estok wants to schedule a formal groundbreaking ceremony to commemorate the start of the project. This is the first of what he hopes will be several Habitat homes constructed in Knox.

Starke-Pulaski Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Steve Morrison says they’ve got to take down one tree on the vacant lot at the corner of Prettyman and Delaware Streets before work can begin.

As a show of good faith the Knox Board of Works unanimously waived the building permit and sewer and water tap fees for the project. Morrison says the nonprofit organization has received tremendous support from the Knox community since announcing their intentions to build a house here.

Last weekend volunteers from the Starke County Young Professionals organization painted the project job trailer.
