Two Starke County 911 Dispatchers Recognized

Two Starke County 911 dispatchers were honored for their life saving efforts during calls to the 911 emergency line.

For the second time in less than two years, 911 Dispatcher Becca Hardel assisted in the delivery of a baby girl over the 911 emergency line Monday, September 16 just before 12:30 p.m. CT. Hardel received a call from a woman stating that she was in active labor at home. Hardel guided the caller through the delivery process and assured the new mother that she and the baby would be safe until Emergency Medical Services personnel arrived at the scene.

For her display of skill and composure in a successful delivery, Hardel will receive her second stork pin and a certificate of recognition from Sheriff Jack Rosa and 911 Director Stacy Noonan.

Starke County 911 Dispatcher Katie Wilson was also recognized for her quick thinking and professional expertise in the early hours of August 10 when she received an urgent call from a distressed individual reporting that a family member was choking. Wilson guided the caller through the Heimlich Maneuver. Four minutes into the call the caller said the person became unresponsive so Wilson was able to guide the caller through the steps of CPR. Through those clear instructions, the caller was able to perform chest compressions effectively until Emergency Medical Services arrived. After approximately three minutes of coaching CPR the patient regained consciousness and was able to communicate with family members on scene. Wilson did not hang up with the caller until first responders arrived at the scene.

Wilson will receive an excellence in dispatching pin for her outstanding efforts and a certificate of recognition from Sheriff Jack Rosa and 911 Director Stacy Noonan.

Noonan noted that these events serve as a reminder of the vital work done by 911 dispatchers every day. Their ability to remain composed and provide essential guidance in emergencies is a testament to their training and dedication to their communities.
