Starke County Relay for Life: Tackling Cancer One Day at a Time

The Starke County Relay for Life already has 26 teams and 213 participants ready to relay this weekend. So far more than $50,000 raised by participants but there is still plenty of time to reach this year’s goal of $62,000. The event begins tomorrow at 3 pm and lasts until 9 am Saturday morning at the Starke County Fairgrounds in Hamlet.

Event chairperson Ericka Taylor-Joseph described why relayers attend the event overnight, “The event is supposed to simulate the journey that a cancer patient goes through, with the exhaustion that they feel so the 18 hours of walking and participating in all of this you’re supposed to feel a small portion of what they go through in their journey.”

The theme for this year’s relay is sports so there will be various sports themed activities going on including basketball and baseball themed games, water balloon toss, a tai-kon-do presentation, a quarter back challenge, black light bowling, a glow-paint fight, midnight madness bingo and a scavenger hunt. Aside from the themed activities there will be the regularly scheduled car show and silent auction. Items available at the auction include handmade relay quilts, autographed flags, gift certificates and Bears and White Sox tickets.

The relay will go on rain or shine. Last year the event saw some rain for the first time in a long time but luckily there are a number of buildings on sight and a plethora of tents and canopies that can be utilized in case weather decides to take a turn for the worse.

Relay for Life is a chance to remember loved ones lost, it gives survivors the opportunity to celebrate their triumph over cancer and gives everyday citizens a chance to join the fight against this despicable disease.
