Pulaski Tree Removal May Turn into Tree Renewal Under Proposed Plan

Pulaski County CourthousePulaski County may have an opportunity to remedy a potential safety hazard while at the same time commemorating Indiana’s Bicentennial.

Winamac Tree Commission member Fred Zahrt approached the Pulaski County Commissioners on Monday night to discuss a tree on the courthouse lawn that appears to be dying. Limbs have been falling from the tree and became a concern last fall.

Courthouse Plans Developing, Cost Remains Factor

Pulaski County CourthouseThe Pulaski County Commissioners spent time reviewing proposed upgrades and renovations to the courthouse.

Plans have been several months in the works with engineering reviews and architectural considerations being made. Although the plan has not yet been green-lighted, Pulaski County has spent considerable time evaluating the problems facing the courthouse and some possible solutions.

Pulaski County Commissioners Consider Start of Courthouse Renovations

Pulaski County CourthouseConsiderations have been made for some time, but weeks of side comments during meetings has led a first step to be taken when it comes to renovating the Pulaski County Courthouse.

During Monday evening’s Pulaski County Commissioners meeting, it was learned that an engineering firm will appear in Winamac to get an overview for the courthouse renovations. Plans are still in their preliminary stages.

Pulaski County Commissioners Discuss Water Problem at Courthouse

The Pulaski County Commissioners heard from Courthouse and Justice Center Maintenance Director, Morry Demarco, about the water problem in the basement of the Courthouse.

Demarco said that the water wasn’t coming into the basement because of the foundation. The water was not being directed away from the building and the drains were full of pine needles and other debris which caused the water to overflow and seep into the Courthouse. Demarco had gotten quotes from two companies who could fix the problem for $4,100 to $5,500. He went in and installed some piping around the Courthouse that is now directing the water from the Courthouse structure to the street. The cost to fix that problem was only $80.

Starke County Commissioners Discuss Funding Options for County Projects

A special meeting was called by the Starke County Commissioners to discuss possible solutions to problems with some of the county buildings, as well as various options for funding some of their recent projects. Several issues were mentioned in particular, such as the jail being short on space under a leaky roof, the courthouse elevator in need of repair with cramped offices on the second floor, and the prosecutor’s office in need of handicap access to name a few.  Because of the expense of these projects, the commissioners met with representatives from H.J. Umbaugh & Associates and RQAW to discuss possible problem solutions and financial strategies.
