IU Health Starke Hospital has named a new interim president. Jared Beasley will take over next month for standing President David Hyatt, who is transferring to a new position at Jay County Hospital in Portland, Ind. Beasley has served as vice president of clinical and diagnostic services at IU Health LaPorte Hospital since last June. He previously worked as the emergency department director at partner IU Health Goshen Hospital for six years. Beasley earned a bachelor of science in nursing from Goshen College, a bachelor of science in economics and business administration from Manchester College and a master in business administration from Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne. Christmas Day is not an off day for everyone.

IU Health Starke Hospital President David Hyatt was up early yesterday distributed candy canes for those who sacrifice at least part of the day with their families to be in their departments helping those who had to spend Christmas in the hospital. Hyatt thanked each and every colleague who was on duty when he arrived for their dedication and devotion.

David Hyatt Named IU Health Starke Hospital President

David Hyatt has been formally named the President of IU Health Starke Hospital. The IU Health Starke Hospital Community Board made the move official during the board’s regular meeting Monday night. He had been serving in the capacity of Interim President since June of this year.

Hyatt transferred to IU Health Starke Hospital in September 2009 as Vice President of Operations after serving as a Business Development Associate at IU Health LaPorte Hospital. In 2010, he was named Vice President of Strategy and Ambulatory Services for the LaPorte hospital.

Board President Ben Bennett stated that the board was very impressed with Hyatt’s enthusiasm, and he feels that Hyatt is ready to move the hospital forward.

IU Health Starke Staff Attends Strategic Planning Retreat

IU Health Starke Hospital personnel attended a Strategic Planning Retreat this week. Presenting pertinent information were Doug Leonard, the president of the Indiana Hospital Association; Tory Castor, vice president of Government Affairs at IU Health Indianapolis; and Dr. Curt Bechler, managing partner of Venture International, LLC.

Included was a review of surveys taken by community members and an examination of national trends. Most of the respondents expressed confidence in the medical staff, and praised the decision to affiliate with IU Health. One weakness, however, was the perception that the antiquated Starke Hospital building denoted inferior services – but Hospital Interim CEO David Hyatt noted that the services rendered at Starke have never been better.

Employers Must Take Different Approach To Healthcare

Mark Savage, director of occupational services for IU Health, spoke to the Starke County Chamber of Commerce members Wednesday night about the rising cost of health care for the employees of the business.

Savage contended that employee healthcare costs are going to increase for employers if their workforce does not become healthier, and he said employers can anticipate a total healthcare cost increase of 6.2 percent this year over 2011.

IU Health Starke Hospital Invests Nearly $750,000 In Equipment

IU Health Starke Hospital Interim President David Hyatt announced this week that the hospital has invested nearly three quarters of a million dollars in new equipment. He presented his capital expenditures report to the Starke County Council last week, and he said total capital expenditures so far this year total $862,071. He says $735,280 of these expenses were for equipment, with $63,589 in contingency funds.

Two high-tech pieces of equipment cost nearly half a million dollars alone, including a Nuclear Medicine Dual-head Camera at $276,749, and a new Patient Monitoring System for the inpatient units with a cost of $202,470. Hyatt says the new patient monitors are the most technologically-advanced monitors available, and will allow patients to be monitored anywhere in the hospital from central monitoring screens in the ICU and Medical Surgical Units.

Extreme Temperatures Prompt Communities To Establish Cooling Centers

With record-breaking highs yesterday, many communities in the area established cooling centers to provide citizens with a place to cool off. Visitors to the Starke County 4-H Fair had to tolerate high 90-degree temperatures that felt hotter than 101 degrees with the humidity.

Fortunately, IU Health Starke Hospital put its Health Mobile to good use providing visitors with a place to go to get out of the sweltering heat and take a break. Hospital Interim President David Hyatt said the Health Mobile will help stave off heat exhaustion for fair-goers.

David Hyatt Is IU Health Starke Hospital Interim CEO

David Hyatt takes over as the interim CEO of IU Health Starke Hospital today. Hyatt says that he is looking forward to the new opportunity and has some good changes in mind.

“I’ve been here at Starke Hospital for the past three years now. I really enjoy it, and love working with the people here. I’m just excited for this new opportunity, and making some good changes and taking Starke Hospital to the next level,” Hyatt said.

As reported Saturday, there is to be a change of leadership at I.U. Health Starke Hospital. Linda Satkoski will become the Chief Operating Office for the entire La Porte health system after serving as the president of I.U. Health Starke Hospital for three years. David Hyatt has agreed to become the Interim President at Starke, and this change will take place June 4.

Satkoski says a number of big changes have been made in the last three years.

There will be a change in leadership at I.U. Health Starke Hospital, as Thor Thordarson, President and CEO of I.U. Health La Porte announced Friday that Linda Satkoski, current president of I.U. Health Starke Hospital, will become the Chief Operating Officer for the entire La Porte Health system. David Hyatt has agreed to become the Interim President at Starke.

The change in leadership will take place June 4th, and we’ll hear more from Thordarson, Satkoski, and Hyatt in interviews next week.

Starke County Commissioners, Council to Hold Meeting to Discuss Future of IU Health Starke Hospital

Representatives of Indiana University Health Starke Hospital will meet next week with members of the Starke County Board of Commissioners and the County Council to discuss the future and continued use of the facilities leased from the County. The current lease expires in 2016.
