DNR Arrests Knox Woman on Drug Trafficking Charge at State Park

DNR law enforcementA Knox woman is jailed in Porter County after reportedly trying to slip drugs to a work release inmate at Indiana Dunes State Park. Indiana Department of Corrections Police noticed a suspicious vehicle yesterday near where their crew from the Westville Correctional Facility was working. They detained Christy Chavez, 38, of Knox, who was arrested by Indiana Conservation Officers. She was booked into the Porter County Jail on charges of trafficking a controlled substance to a prisoner. Chavez was trying to drop off synthetic marijuana and cigarettes, according to a news release from the DNR Division of Law Enforcement.

 

 

 

 

DNR Officers Make Drug Arrests in Pulaski County

A North Judson man and a Winamac man face illegal possession of a controlled substance charges in Pulaski County following their arrest Sunday in Pulaski County. DNR Law Enforcement Officers reportedly found them near the Tippecanoe River by the Winamac South Ramp crushing and snorting hydrocodone and acetaminophen pills for which they did not have prescriptions. Anthony Prato, 22, of North Judson and Zebadiah Breyfogle, 18, of Winamac were both taken to the Pulaski County Jail.

 

Construction Crew Finds Human Skull in Valparaiso

  
 

An excavating crew in Porter County makes a grisly discovery. Contractors for the Precision Pipeline Company found a human skull late Monday morning and notified the Porter County Sheriff’s Department. Detectives searched the area but did not uncover any additional human remains. A forensic anthropologist from the University of Indianapolis reviewed digital photos of the skull and said he believed it to be of pre-1940s origin. Conservation officers took possession of the remains and instructed the Precision Pipeline Company to cease digging in the area where the skull was found. The DNR Historical Preservation and Archeology Division will analyze the remains to determine the skull’s age and origin.

DNR Law Enforcement Responds to Snowmobile Fatality, Wrecks

 
 

Several snowmobile accidents, including one fatality, were reported over the weekend. The fatality occurred on Lake Manitou in Fulton County early Sunday morning, according to DNR officials. They say James Downs III, 51, of Rochester, was operating his snowmobile alone when the accident happened. Friends found him around 6 a.m. Sunday pinned under his snowmobile. Initial findings indicate Downs was approaching the shoreline, turned too sharply and was thrown from his snowmobile. Officials with the Fulton County Coroner’s Office say he died of blunt force trauma to his chest and torso. Speed, alcohol and reduced visibility are possible contributing factors to the crash, but toxicology results will not be available for several weeks. Continue reading

Hunting Range Accident Sends Porter Man to Chicago Hospital

  
 

A Porter man is hospitalized in Chicago after a Wednesday afternoon accident at Jasper-Pulaski Fish and Wildlife Area. DNR officials say Timothy P. Tackett, 54, was at the property’s gun range when the accident occurred. He was reportedly adjusting a sight on his rifle when it fell, discharged and shot him in his right hand. Tackett told conservation officers he did not realize the weapon was loaded. He drove himself to Porter Regional Hospital and was transferred to Christ Advocate Hospital in Chicago for specialized treatment. The incident remains under investigation. Conservation officers remind anyone handling firearms to point the muzzle in a safe direction and always treat the firearm as if it were loaded.

Hunter in Marshall County Airlifted Following Fall

 
 

A man who was deer hunting in Marshall County was airlifted to South Bend for the treatment of a spinal injury after falling from his tree stand near Tippecanoe Sunday morning. Rodney Kreft, 54, fell 24 feet when his tree stand broke, according to DNR officials. The stand had been left in the tree for several years, and Kreft was not wearing a safety harness. This year alone DNR officials have responded to 11 falls from tree stands resulting in serious injuries. Hunters are reminded to inspect their equipment regularly and use a harness when hunting from elevated positions in order to minimize the risk of injury.

 

ATV Rider Injured in Hit-and-Run Accident

 
 

A New Buffalo, Mich. man is hospitalized in South Bend following a Saturday night hit-and-run accident. It happened around 10:30 near County Road 1000 North and 150 East in LaPorte County. Matthew Ramsey, 21, was driving his ATV on the roadway when he was struck by a pickup truck. Ramsey was thrown from the ATV and run over by the truck, according to officials with the DNR law enforcement division.
