Starke County Library Project Resumes after Winter Hiatus

The Starke County Library construction project has been on hold throughout the winter season as most of the work that needs to be done first has been outdoors.

Library Director Sheila Urwiler said the under-sub duct work is being done and when that is finished the foundation will be poured. Walls will be built after the foundation is complete.

Cupcake Contest Scheduled at Knox Library

A phone call made one WKVI reporter’s day last week.

A representative from the Henry F. Schricker Public Library in Knox called Anita Goodan and asked her to be a judge for a cupcake contest at the library on Thursday, April 18. She, of course, accepted without hesitation and will join other judges from several Starke County restaurants and members of the library board.

Starke County Library Offers Free Tax Prep

Good news for those who qualify for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program: tax preparation will be conducted free of charge! The Starke County Public Library is now offering help with both federal and state tax returns for those with an adjusted gross income of no more than $51,000.

Tax preparations will be completed by IRS-certified volunteers on an appointment-only basis at the Henry F. Schricker Branch, located at 152 W. Culver Road in Knox. Call (574) 772-7323 and ask for the Reference Department for any questions or to schedule an appointment. If you only need to file the Unified Tax Credit for the Elderly form but do not need to file Federal or State income taxes, you do not need an appointment for assistance.

Local Libraries Planning Programs to Get a Jump on January

Several libraries in the area are getting a positive start to 2013 by offering a number of new programs to their visitors.

In Starke County, the Henry F. Schricker Public Library will show a recently-released documentary on the Grand Kankakee Marsh, entitled “Everglades of the North.” The documentary, which was released in the fall of 2011, explores the diverse ecology, illustrates the astonishing history, and unveils the controversial saga of the marshlands that were once known as the Northern Everglades.

Construction Still Underway At Starke County Public Library

The construction efforts at the Henry F. Schricker Public Library are still going strong, but that is subject to change depending on the weather. Director Sheila Urwiler said the construction crews are currently finishing up the pouring of concrete footings and the foundation walls. Within the next two weeks, Urwiler said the crews will complete the excavation and backfilling for more of the concrete for floors.

Once the foundation walls and footings have been completed, Urwiler said work will begin on installing the heating, ventilating, and air conditioning system, plumbing, and rough framing – that is, assuming the weather holds.

Construction Underway at Henry F. Schricker Public Library

Construction efforts have kicked off at the Henry F. Schricker Public Library. Director Shelia Urwiler explained that they’ve started work on the children’s wing as they’re adding about 6000 square feet for the new children and young adult department.

Urwiler said they’re hoping for the construction to be done by mid-July, but it is possible that the construction could take longer than expected. The total price on the work came to about $1.5 million, with the remaining balance from the $1.875 million they received from bonds to go toward furnishings, new fixtures, electrical wiring, and other expenses.

Last Day For Art Exhibit At Henry F. Schricker Public Library

Today is the last day to check out the art exhibit being held at the Henry F. Schricker Public Library in Knox. The exhibit has been on display since July 9, and was collected and put up by artists Wesley Dolinski and Darius Mirza.

Sculptures, photographs, and paintings are on display at the library. Dolinski explained that most of the work was done by he and Mirza, but three or four pieces on display were purchased from art teachers of his past. More than 40 pieces are being displayed.

Art Dominates Henry F. Schricker Public Library

Visitors to the Henry F. Schricker Public Library may have noticed a bit of a change about the place, as the lobby is now plastered with all kinds of art, courtesy of artists Wesley Dolinski and Darius Mirza.

Sculptures, photographs, and paintings are on display at the library. Dolinski explained that most of the work was done by him and Mirza, but three or four pieces on display were purchased from art teachers of his past. More than 40 pieces are being displayed.

Photographer Darius Mirza says when he moved to America in 2006, he tried to capture the urban life settings of big cities such as Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles, but he also wanted to share some other settings as well, such as European architecture and landscapes. As a result, his photography collection – and many of his works on display – include images from Switzerland, Romania, and other countries.

Wendy McIntire Wins “Original Boyz From The Hood” Contest At SCPL

Local attorney and WKVI board member Leroy Gudeman and Ed Hasnerl, WKVI’s Talking of Many Things host, were two of the 30 pencil drawing subjects in the recent “Original Boyz from the Hood” contest held at the Henry F. Schricker Library. Patrons were invited to look at the pictures and try to figure out who the pictures depicted.

The library announced the winners yesterday, and they included Wendy McIntire who correctly identified 19 of the subjects and won first place. Carla Stoll identified 14 for second place, and Iva Griffith was the third place prize winner with 11 named correctly.

Diantha Upham invites everyone to watch for women in the community in the next few months.

Kindergarten Countdown Meeting Tomorrow in Knox

A Kindergarten Countdown informational meeting is scheduled for tomorrow for students entering the Knox Community Elementary School Kindergarten program. Starke United, IU Health and the Knox Community School Corporation are sponsoring a Kindergarten Camp in June and this meeting will help explain the function of the camp. Director of Curriculum and Instruction at the Knox Community School Corporation, Peggy Shidaker, has more.

Chocolate Presentation Given at Knox Library

Brandy Love, of the South Bend Chocolate Company, visited the Henry F. Schricker Library in Knox yesterday to talk about chocolate.

South Bend Chocolate was established in 1991 with Notre Dame products. Since that time, they have added to that and now have over 350 products sold at 20 locally owned or franchise stores.

Brandy showed those gathered the fruit that helps produce chocolate.

Literacy Program Coming to Starke County

The SCILL Center Director Jerry Gurrado announced this week that a literacy program is coming to Starke County. Gurrado talked about the program’s focus.

“We had a training session at the library in Knox, and we had four volunteers that were trained,” explained Gurrado. “If anyone is in need of getting training in basic reading or math skills, the courses are taught in a one-on-one situation instead of in a big classroom.”

Endangered Heritage Exhibit on Display at Knox, North Judson Libraries

A special display is being featured at the Henry F. Schricker Public Library in Knox and at the North Judson-Wayne Township Public Library for the next two months.

Endangered Heritage, a collections care advocacy exhibit from the Indiana Historical Society, helps educate local communities about the need for good collections stewardship. It gives examples of the dangers to objects in collections and information about caring for collections. You can obtain great information on how to preserve family heirlooms that you may want to pass down to your children and to generations after that.

Starke County Youth Soccer Sign-ups begin this Week

The Starke County Youth Soccer League committee is already thinking forward to the 2012 season. Sign up begins Saturday, January 7th at the Henry F. Schricker Public Library in Knox from time is 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The youth sign up fee is $35.00 for grades preschool thru 8th grade and $90.00 for a family of three. After three children, the cost is $20 per child. You can also sign up on the web at this website.

Public Hearing on Proposed Klockner Drive Project This Week

Citizens of Knox and landowners affected by the Klockner Road Project in the Industrial Park will be brought up to date on the proposed work at a meeting Wednesday night to be held at the Henry F. Schricker Library in Knox.

According to Starke County Development Director Charles Weaver, the road was designed as a rural thoroughfare and was never meant to carry the truck traffic now using it.

Henry F. Schricker Public Library Expansion Project Underway

The Henry F. Schricker library expansion project is underway and moving along right on schedule. Library Director Sheila Urwiler said that the next step they’ll be taking is to get the plans and drawings to an estimator.

“We’re getting our final estimates and they’re drawing up the construction documents to go out for bidding, and the bidding should start in February sometime, we’re not sure exactly when yet, but that’s the goal right now,” said Urwiler.

Public Hearing on Klockner Drive Construction Scheduled for Next Week

A public hearing has been scheduled to gain opinions on current design plans for the Starke County Commissioners’ project to reconstruct a portion of County Road 300 East, or Klockner Drive, in the Knox Industrial Park.

The proposed improvements include the reconstruction of County Road 300 East between Culver Road to north Pacific Avenue. The project proposes installation of new pavement, concrete curb and gutter, storm sewer collection, driveway and approach work. The project will be constructed in three phases and impacts 33 parcels and will require the acquisition of 3.4 acres of right-of-way.
