Drugs, Tattooing Equipment Reportedly Found by New LaPorte County Jail Body Scanner

The LaPorte County Jail’s investment in a body scanner is already starting to pay off. The $199,000 SecurPASS scanner was put into service on November 20, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Less than 48 hours later, the scanner reportedly revealed six Flexeril pills hidden in the brassiere of a female inmate being admitted to the jail.

Three Charged with Trafficking, Following LaPorte County Jail Contraband Investigation

 

A two-month investigation into contraband at the LaPorte County Jail has resulted in three arrests. Police with the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office say they first got information about possible contraband in September. A search of the cell block housing inmate workers reportedly turned up tobacco, marijuana, and a cell phone.

Arrest Made in LaPorte Homicide

An arrest has been made in the stabbing death incident in LaPorte.

Jose Guido is being held in the LaPorte County Jail on a charge of murder. He is suspected of stabbing a man outside of a residence at 119 John Street in LaPorte.

Dispatchers received a phone call from a resident who had heard a woman screaming outside. The caller said blood was on the ground, according to a news release. When police arrived at the scene, officers found an adult Hispanic man laying on the ground at the location. The victim, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene by the LaPorte County Coroner.

Guido was taken in for questioning and was later charged with murder.

Inmate Arrested After Failing to Return From Work Release

A LaPorte County Jail inmate faces new charges after police there say he did not return from work release. They found Jesus Temores-Casillas, 33, of LaPorte, at a home in the 400 block of Lawrence Street there and say he refused to leave. He was arrested on a warrant for the Level 6 felony offense of escape. Temores-Casillas also faces a misdemeanor charge of invasion of privacy for violating an active protective order keeping him from being at the residence and having contact with his wife.

Wanted Man Arrested after Allegedly Resisting, Intimidating Officers

A man wanted on several felony and misdemeanor charges was taken into custody on Wednesday afternoon, but he didn’t go willingly.

Officers active in the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office Warrants Division arrived at a home in the 10,000 West block of Division Road near Westville in search of 47-year-old Bernard Shaw. He was wanted on 11 outstanding warrants on various charges including domestic battery, failure to return to lawful detention, criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon and intimidation.

LaPorte County Courthouse Evacuated after Bomb Threat

 
 

A Michigan City man was arrested Wednesday after allegedly sending a bomb threat notice by mail to the LaPorte County clerk’s office.

The employee received a letter addressed to the clerk’s office delivered by the United States Postal Service. When she opened the envelope, she found a powdery substance and a letter, according to a news release. She immediately took the envelope and the contents to the courthouse security office.

The letter stated that explosives were located in or near the courthouse, as noted in the press release. With that, the courthouse was evacuated and a request was made for the assistance of the Michigan City Police Department, LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office, LaPorte County Hazardous Materials Team, Michigan City Fire Department and LaPorte County Emergency Management.

Non-Compliant Sex Offender Found Living Next to Day Care Facility

A Michigan City man was arrested on Tuesday for being a non-compliant sex offender.

In August, officers found that Michael Sofranko, 36, was no longer living at his registered address and did not complete his annual registration with the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department.

Sofranko was convicted of a felony child molesting charge in LaPorte Circuit Court in 1998. He was also identified as an offender against children. As a result, he is required to register as a sex offender with law enforcement until 2022.

Two Extradited to LaPorte County

Two wanted offenders were recently extradited to LaPorte from Tennessee by deputies from the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office Warrants Division and booked into the LaPorte County Jail.

Richard Maynard, 50, and Christine Stultz (aka Christine Riegle), 40, were detained in Coffee County, Tennessee after law enforcement officers there found the pair were wanted on drug charges in an investigation by the LaPorte County Metro Operations Unit.

LaPorte County Man Arrested after Police Pursuit

A Westville man was arrested on Tuesday after he fled police in a vehicle.

LaPorte Police Department officers initiated a traffic stop on Boston Street near the Norfolk Southern railroad crossing near Factory Street. The officers recognized James D. Brinsfield, 38, who was wanted on a charge of dealing in a schedule I controlled substance (heroin) as a Class A felony.

Two Arrested on Cocaine Charges

A 50-year-old man and a juvenile were recently arrested for their alleged role in dealing cocaine.

Officers from the LaPorte County Metro Operations Unit arrested Joseph M. Szynal and the 15-year-old juvenile without incident at a home in the 100 block of McClung Road in LaPorte. Cocaine was seized in this incident.

An investigation led to the arrest of the pair for the distribution of cocaine in and around the city of LaPorte.
