LaPorte Sheriff to Host Halloween Event

Halloween-trick-or-treatThe sixth annual Trick-or-Treat and Halloween Safety event is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 31, hosted by LaPorte County Sheriff Michael Mollenhauer.

The event promotes safety for children while trick-or-treating in the community. Children attending the event will receive a reflective trick-or-treat bag with an activity book and crayons. A reflector badge will also be supplied. Hot chocolate and cookies will be served.

LaPorte Jail Inmate Charged with Arson

 
 

An inmate has been charged with arson after setting a mattress on fire in his jail cell at the LaPorte County Jail.

After an investigation was conducted, it was found that on July 4, Marzono Shelly reportedly started the fire in his cell in the south end of the jail. 40 inmates were moved from that part of the jail and Shelly was transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation. He was later transferred to the Indiana Department of Corrections due to his destructive and dangerous behavior.

LaPorte County to Increase Patrols during Prom Season

 
 

Prom season is gearing up so the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department and the LaPorte County DUI Task Force will increase enforcement and patrols around prom and post-prom sites this spring.

Proms for Marquette, New Prairie, South Central and Westville schools in LaPorte County begin the weekend of April 27 and continue through May 18 and it’s the goal of law enforcement to deter alcohol use and eliminate alcohol related crashes among prom attendees.

Mini-Riot Occurs at LaPorte County Jail

A mini-riot broke out in the LaPorte County Jail Friday evening – this after the Sheriff’s announcement last week that the closure of a jail wing put the jail in an overcrowding situation.

The inmates refused to lock-down into their cells and deputies had to use tasers and pepper spray to bring order to the population. The inmates complied with orders prior to the arrival of road officers and a K9 unit to the cell block.

One Wing at LaPorte County Jail Forced to Close

A wing is now closed in the LaPorte County Jail after the LaPorte County Council did not approve a request for an additional appropriation of $70,000 to fund the jail overtime budget for the rest of the year. That money was to be used to properly staff jail operations. As a result, Sheriff Michael Mollenhauer said all overtime has been stopped.

Two LaPorte County Residents Arrested on Heroin Charges

Two LaPorte residents were arrested Thursday, February 9th after an ongoing investigation by the LaPorte County Metro Operations Unit into the sale and distribution of heroin in the City of LaPorte.

Ryan Thomason, 26, and Jesse Brown, 24, were taken into custody without incident. Thomason has been charged with Dealing a Narcotic Drug in excess of three grams, a Class A Felony. Brown has been charged with Aiding, Inducing and Causing an Offense, a Class A Felony. Both are being held in the LaPorte County Jail pending appearances in LaPorte Circuit Court.

LaPorte Man Arrested on Warrant for Dealing Cocaine

A LaPorte man was arrested on an outstanding arrest warrant for Dealing Cocaine, a Class A Felony.

26-year-old Anthony Flores, of 605 Fremont Street in LaPorte was taken into custody at his home without incident and is currently in the LaPorte County Jail. His initial hearing in LaPorte Circuit Court is scheduled for Friday, February 10th.

This arrest was the result of a four week investigation into the distribution of cocaine in the City of LaPorte as well as LaPorte County. Sheriff Michael Mollenhauer credits this arrest on a team effort between the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department and the LaPorte and Michigan City Police Departments. LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office Opens Prescription Drop Site

If you have some unneeded or unwanted prescription medication and you’re not sure how to get rid of it, you’re in luck. LaPorte County Sheriff Michael Mollenhauer has announced that there is a new Prescription Pill Drop Site in the lobby of the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office, located at 809 State Street in LaPorte. The box is provided to give citizens a place to dispose of their unused or out-of-date prescription medication and ensures proper disposal.

Cause Determined in Death of LaPorte County Jail Inmate

LaPorte County Sheriff Michael Mollenhauer has released further information regarding the death of an in-custody inmate at the La Porte County Security Complex. Dead is Roy E. Young, 37, of Michigan City, Indiana. He was pronounced dead at 7:42 AM on Saturday March 19th, 2011 at Indiana University Health LaPorte Hospital.

An autopsy was performed on Monday March 21st, 2011. The official cause of death is cardiac arrhythmia induced by a drug overdose. The death is being termed “accidental.” During the autopsy, a plastic “tie off” baggie was found in the decedent’s intestinal track. Evidence is consistent with the statement given to police by Mr. Young’s cellmate that Mr. Young told him he had “swallowed cocaine” during the LaPorte Police traffic stop in an attempt to prevent being arrested for being in possession of the drug. Toxicology results are pending.

LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department Investigates Inmate Death

LaPorte County Sheriff’ Michael Mollenhauer has announced the death of an in-custody inmate at the LaPorte County Security Complex. The death occurred in the early morning hours of Saturday, March 19th, 2011.

No details are being released pending further investigation of the incident by the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office and the LaPorte County Coroner’s Office and until notification is made to the individual’s next of kin.
