LaPorte Man Faces Multiple Felonies After Run-In With Neighbors

 
 

A LaPorte man police say threatened to stab and kill his neighbors with a knife and a barbecue fork faces multiple felony charges following the Tuesday afternoon incident. It happened around 4:30 in the 600 block of Tipton Street. Neighbors told the police they heard Mark Roberts, Jr., 26, arguing with his girlfriend inside their residence and saw him grab and slap her. The neighbor yelled at him to stop, and says Roberts barged into his apartment to confront him. A scuffle ensued, and the witness told the police he punched Roberts in the face. Roberts got up and went back to his apartment. He came out a few minutes later armed with the knife and fork and reportedly threatened to kill the witnesses, who told him the police had been called. They told him the police had been called, and he returned to his apartment. Roberts was sitting outside when the police arrived. He was arrested on charges of residential entry, intimidation and criminal recklessness. Roberts’ girlfriend told the police they argued but said he did not strike her.

 

Man Arrested for Sexual Battery in LaPorte

 
 

LaPorte police investigated a battery incident at the Commons Apartments in LaPorte early Saturday morning. According to the report, at around 12:49 a.m. police were summoned to the apartment complex to investigate a battery complaint.

Upon their arrival, the victim told police that she had been outside visiting with a neighbor who inappropriately grabbed her buttocks several times after she had told him to stop. She told police that she then confronted the suspect’s girlfriend about his actions; his girlfriend then allegedly said that is how he behaves when he’s been drinking.

Police soon made contact with the suspect, Rodney Wahl, 33, of La Porte, who did not comment on the incident. He was taken into custody and charged with Sexual Battery, a Class D felony.

LaPorte PD Investigating Burglary

 
 

LaPorte police are investigating a burglary at 1507 Ohio Street that is said to have occurred sometime between Wednesday, June 19 and Friday, June 21, when a Rossi shotgun, .380 handgun, coins and jewelry were stolen. The home was locked at the time of the burglary but police found no indications of forced entry.

A LaPorte man told police Wednesday that he received an email from a subject claiming to be with the U.S. Military. The person was requesting assistance in smuggling $780 million allegedly confiscated by Saddam Hussein into the United States. The email requested the victim’s personal banking information so that the money could be wired into his account.

LaPorte Woman Arrested after Alleged Battery Incident

A LaPorte woman was arrested late Tuesday evening after an alleged assault.

A witness and one of the victims reportedly told LaPorte police that Kristina Yacconi, 34, came home intoxicated. Yacconi allegedly went into the kitchen and proceeded to assault one adult and the victim’s 10-year-old daughter. The witness pulled Yacconi off the victims and sat on her until the victims could leave the room. Yacconi left the residence.

LaPorte Police Investigating Early Morning Stabbing

 
 

Police in LaPorte are investigating an early morning stabbing that sent a 20-year-old man to the hospital. It happened in the 600 Block of Maple Avenue. Police responded at 2:43 a.m. and found the victim lying on the ground holding his abdomen. He told the police he had been stabbed several times by someone he knew. He was taken to the hospital by ambulance. The investigation is continuing.

EMS Revive Potential Heroin Overdose Victim

 
 

EMS personnel in LaPorte successfully revived a Michigan City woman believed to have overdosed on heroin. LaPorte Police were called to an apartment in the 300 block of Park Street at 7:42 p.m. Sunday. The male tenant told the officers the 29-year-old Michigan City woman appeared to be very intoxicated when she showed up at his apartment. She eventually became unresponsive, and he called 911. Heroin is possibly to blame for last Tuesday’s deaths of a 20-year-old LaPorte man and a 17-year-old girl from Dyer. Toxicology results are pending.

 

Three Arrested for Theft of Garden Tractor in LaPorte

 
 
A Knox teen and two LaPorte men were arrested on Wednesday for allegedly stealing a garden tractor from a business in LaPorte. According to the report, on June 5 around 12:12 p.m., police were called to a business at 628 Boston St. to investigate a report of three men who had reportedly pushed a garden tractor off the property of the business.

Officers arrived at the scene shortly after but did not find the suspects in the area, so they traveled to a local recycling business to find out if the suspects had taken the tractor there to find its value. A company employee informed police that three men had just pushed a garden tractor into their lot with a vehicle before pushing it onto the weigh scale by hand.

Copper Wire Stolen from NIPSCO Truck in LaPorte; Investigation Underway

 
 
LaPorte police are investigating the theft of copper wire from a business on State Road 2. Reports indicate that the copper wire had been stolen from a NIPSCO truck at their facility at 1501 State Road 2 West between 3:30 p.m. Wednesday and 8 a.m. Thursday. The suspect made off with four rolls of copper wire.

Air Compressor Stolen from LaPorte Airport

 
 

A black and yellow tow-behind Atlas Copco air compressor, a 90 pound jackhammer and a chipping hammer were stolen recently from the LaPorte County Airport. They disappeared sometime between May 29 and June 5, according to the report filed with the LaPorte City Police. The items were last seen near the construction site for the airport’s new hangar. LaPorte Police Launch Death Investigation

 
 

The LaPorte County Coroner’s Office and LaPorte Police Department are investigating the deaths of a 20-year-old man and 17-year-old girl at a home in the 500 Block of East Lincolnway. The man is identified as Ethan Day of LaPorte. The girl was from Dyer. Her name hasn’t been released since she was a minor at the time of her death. Day’s father found them at 6:41 p.m. Tuesday evening and called the police. No information has been released about the cause of death. According to a news release from the LaPorte Police Department, “There is absolutely no reason whatsoever to believe that there is any ongoing danger to the public as a whole.”

A door-to-door scam artist is making the rounds in LaPorte, claiming to be a music student raising money for a band trip to Florida. The LaPorte High School music director tells the police department there that there’s no ongoing solicitation, nor is there a planned band trip to Florida. A LaPorte woman was robbed at knifepoint at her Grove Street apartment Friday morning, according to police there. The 31-year-old victim told them she was walking out her back door onto an enclosed porch around 11:25 a.m. when two Hispanic men wearing black jackets, gloves and ski masks confronted her. One of the men reportedly held a large kitchen knife to her throat, and they demanded money. They got away with a bank card and a small amount of cash. LaPorte Police Looking for Teen’s Attackers

LaPorte Police DepartmentOfficers from the LaPorte Police Department are searching for three male suspects who reportedly attacked a teenage girl around noon Monday as she was walking home from a friend’s house. The girl told the officers she noticed the three men crossing the street when she left a convenience store at the corner of Indiana Avenue and Osborn Street. She said the men followed her, even though she made several turns. The girl then reportedly took off running, and the suspects gave chase. She said they caught up with her in a driveway in the 500 block of B Street and pulled her shirt off. However, the resident of the home told police she was home all day with her dog, and she did not hear any commotion, nor did her dog bark. When officers retraced the girl’s steps they found her shoes at Plummer and A Streets. Her purse is still missing. The suspects are described as white males in their 20s wearing all black.

Valuables Stolen From Unlocked Vehicle

Citizen Foils Shoplifting Attempt

Police in LaPorte are looking for two would-be shoplifters whose attempt to steal a scanner from a Radio Shack store was foiled by an alert citizen.

Store employees say two white men in dark clothing came into the store just after 5 p.m. Saturday, and one asked to see a police scanner. He asked a few questions and then walked toward the door with it in his hand. A store employee tried to grab him, but he kept going. However, police say a citizen who was walking up to the store grabbed the scanner from the suspect’s hands. The would-be shoplifters fled on foot through the alley.

LaPorte Man Faces Felony Charges Stemming From Chocolate Theft

 
 

A LaPorte man faces two felony charges after reportedly helping himself to chocolates from a store there. Officers from the LaPorte Police Department responded to Little Chocolates on 1st Street around 11:30 yesterday morning. An upset store employee told them a man was inside the store acting strangely, and said she thought he stole some chocolate. Officers reportedly found a man matching the suspect’s description walking nearby and eating chocolate. Zacheria Faiyaz, 20, initially told officers he “swiped his card to pay for it” then said the store gives him “free stuff.” Neither story was true, according to the arrest report, which indicates he faces a D felony theft charge. While searching Faiyaz, officers reportedly found an open bag of syringes in his front jacket pocket. Faiyaz admitted he had “relapsed and used again,” according to the arrest report. He faces a second D felony charge for possession of a syringe.
