‘Break the Silence with Bags of Hope’ Fun Fair to be Held During Child Abuse Prevention Month

In order to raise awareness about child abuse and neglect while simultaneously collecting resources to help those in need, an event entitled “Break the Silence with Bags of Hope” will be held at the Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center next month.  

According to the latest statistics available from the Indiana Department of Child Services’ child fatality report, nearly 60 Hoosier children died from some form of abuse or neglect in the 2016 State Fiscal Year.

The Knox Peppermint Parade has Been Rescheduled Due to Anticipated Inclement Weather

Due to the inclement weather that is anticipated for Saturday, December 1st, the Knox Peppermint Parade has been rescheduled for Saturday, December 15th.

Starke County Election Board Finalizes Plans for This Week’s Poll Worker Training Sessions

Starke County expects to have a total of 20 first-time poll workers this Election Day. During last week’s election board meeting, board member Peg Brettin said voters will notice some younger people working the polls, “Because many of the older people either, one, don’t want to do it anymore, or two, are deceased,” she explained. “So that’s one of the reasons why you’re going to see a lot of new people out there.”

Tonight’s ‘Bluegrass Jam’ Event in Knox Will Help Assist Hungry Starke County Citizens

Community members are invited to bring non-perishable food donations to the Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center tonight in order to gain access to the Country Music and Gospel Bluegrass Jam event hosted by the City of Knox.

The event will begin at 6 p.m. and wrap up around 10 p.m.

Earlier this week, Mayor Dennis Estok told city council members and meeting attendees that there will be a few bands that typically perform during this annual event. However, he noted that it’s open to community musicians as well. Continue reading

Knox Clerk-Treasurer Delivers Community Center Renovation Project Update

Knox Clerk-Treasurer Jeff Houston updated city council member about the ongoing renovation project at the Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center at this week’s meeting.

Clerk-Treasurer Houston said the project is nearing completion, with just a few minor things remaining. He noted that they will, of course, still have to deal with upkeep and maintenance but for the most part, the major renovations are all finished.

Knox Mayor Reports that Community Center Renovations Should be Wrapping Up Soon

When the Knox City Council convened on Tuesday, Mayor Dennis Estok alerted members that the community center renovation project is nearing completion.With the roof portion finished and the new HVAC system installed there’s one remaining renovation to that will be addressed in the near future.

Estok told members that next week, contractors will start working on the floors. He added,  “So hopefully, we can get that project wrapped up.” In a past meeting, it was stated that the proposed floor work is estimated to cost around $42,425. Continue reading

Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center HVAC Upgrades Complete, Training to Take Place Soon

At the Knox City Council meeting on Tuesday night, Clerk-Treasurer Jeff Houston alerted members that upgrades to the HVAC system at the Community Center are complete.

Houston said, “They’re going to do a little bit of training with people in the city to make sure that we’re aware of how to control the heating and air condition but I’m pretty happy with the way it’s working over there now.”

Houston added that the final invoice for that project has been submitted. Back in July, the Knox Board of Public Works awarded the bid for the project to McGrath Refrigeration. In the past, Mayor Estok stated that this new system will be far more efficient than the old one. Continue reading

Knox City Council Receives Estimate for Community Center Flooring Renovations

The Knox City Council members received a few updates about the Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center renovation project when they met last week.

Clerk-Treasurer Jeff Houston informed council members that work on the roof is complete and the satellite was reinstalled. Mayor Dennis Estok went onto say they received the estimate for the flooring work that will be tackled in the near future. Continue reading

Update About Upgrades to Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center

An update about ongoing renovations to the Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center was provided by Mayor Dennis Estok during last night’s brief Knox City Council meeting.

Mayor Estok told council members that work being done to the heating and air conditioning systems is nearly complete. He said only one compressor still needs to be installed. He went on to say that roofers will be commencing their work this week, possibly as soon as today. Continue reading
