Making sure money is available to pay Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department employees was the goal of a couple budget items approved by the county council this month. To help balance the county’s General Fund budget, council members had previously moved several staff members’ salaries into other parts of the budget. But that’s led to some new issues.

Pulaski County Sheriff Reports Several Weekend Drug Arrests
It was another busy weekend for the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department. Sheriff Jeff Richwine told the county council Monday the department had several drug arrests. “One of them was a guy going down [State Road] 39 106 miles an hour,” he explained. “They get him stopped, run the dog around him, and he’s got almost $5,000 cash, a bunch of marijuana, and some needles.”
Four Accused of Failure to Report Child Abuse Have Charges Dismissed, Due to ‘Administrative Problem’
Four defendants in a 2016 Pulaski County child abuse case have had their charges dismissed, due to what prosecutors are calling an administrative problem. On December 14, 2016, sheriff’s deputies reportedly found a three-year-old girl locked inside a plywood box in the living room of a home near Denham. Several adults in and around the home were taken into custody.

Three Arrested on Drug Charges
Three people were arrested on drug charges that stemmed from a traffic stop in Pulaski County on Saturday.
A Winamac Police officer pulled over a vehicle for speeding and the K9 officer was called to the location of the traffic stop. The K9 reportedly alerted to the presence of drugs inside the vehicle. In a subsequent search of the vehicle, methamphetamine and marijuana were found along with drug paraphernalia. Kim Baker, 60, of Winamac, was placed into custody and taken to the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department for questioning.
One Arrested in Stabbing Incident in Pulaski County
One man was arrested in an alleged stabbing incident that occurred at a Winamac home on Sunday evening.
According to Pulaski County Sheriff Jeff Richwine, Robert Rowe reportedly stabbed the male victim while the victim was laying down in a bedroom at a home in the 2500 block of N. 175 E. The pair was allegedly arguing prior to the incident. Police say the victim was stabbed with a kitchen knife and sustained lacerations to his chest and left side. He was taken to the hospital and later airlifted to another facility. The depth of the cuts is not known.
One Arrested after Vehicle Pursuit in Pulaski County
A Westville, Indiana man was arrested late Sunday night after leading Pulaski County sheriff’s deputies on a pursuit that ended in Fulton County.
Pulaski County Sheriff Jeff Richwine told WKVI News that 32-year-old Johnny Mullens was on a resident’s property when shots were heard. As Pulaski County officers responded, they found Mullens driving in the vehicle that was described as the one being at the residence on 400 East in Winamac.
Indiana State Police Assist with Double Homicide Investigation in Pulaski County
On Friday, Indiana State Police were called to Pulaski County to investigate a suspected double homicide.
According to ISP representatives, evidence from the investigation lead to the arrest of 32-year-old Ross Stacy, of Winamac, the morning of Saturday, March 10th. Ross Stacy is being held in the Pulaski County Jail and has been formally charged with Murder. Continue reading
Wednesday Travel Alerts and Road Closures in Pulaski and Starke Counties
Though the rain has stopped for now, there are still several roads in Starke and Pulaski Counties that are closed due to flooding and high water.
Starke County High Way Superintendent Rik Ritzler warns drivers that it is imperative to refrain from driving down the flooded area of a roadway. He said those roads are closed for a reason, and if you get stuck your rescue could divert resources that may be needed elsewhere.
He added that Starke County is on an orange “Watch” level travel alert due to flooding. He explained that a “Watch” means that conditions are threatening to the safety of the public. Continue reading

Whereabouts of Missing Knox Woman Remain Unknown
Detectives and officers with the Knox City Police Department are still investigating the disappearance of 37-year-old Barbara McCurdy, of Knox.
Barb McCurdy was reportedly last seen Sunday, January 14th wearing a pink Carhartt-style jacket and blue jeans. Police believe she was driving a black 2006 Chevy Cobalt with an Indiana license plate number of CK3142.
Knox Police Chief Harold Smith she’s been missing for about two weeks and, as far as they know, no family or friends have had any contact with her. He reported that during their investigation, the Knox Police Department has been coordinating with the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department as well as the Indiana State Police. Continue reading
Four Arrested in Friday Traffic Stop in Pulaski County
Four people were arrested on drug related charges after a traffic stop on Friday afternoon in the area of State Road 14 and County Road 100 W. in Pulaski County.
According to the arrest information, Ray Clemans, 60, of San Pierre, was arrested on a preliminary felony charge of maintaining a common nuisance, and misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia.

According to the Indiana State Department of Health’s winter newsletter, the rate of unintentional drug poisoning deaths increased by nearly 900 percent from 1999 to 2015. In 2016, over 1,800 Hoosiers died from drug poisoning, mainly from opioids.
Pulaski County Commissioners Approve Purchase of New Data Backup System
Pulaski County is moving ahead with upgrades to its data backup system. The county commissioners voted Monday to buy a new Unitrends backup device. That involves an up-front cost of $25,000 for the device itself, plus $6,900 a year for support.

Pulaski County has fired its emergency medical services director, over concerns that she used county money on personal expenses. The county commissioners voted unanimously Monday to terminate the employment of Nikki Lowry, effective immediately.
