Culver Schools to Do Away with Alternative Lunch for Students with Negative Account Balances

 

Students at Culver Community Schools who have fallen behind in their lunch payments will now continue to get regular hot lunches. Previously, students who had accumulated a negative balance in their lunch accounts beyond a certain amount had been given an alternative box lunch. The issue, according to Superintendent Karen Shuman, is that students were still being charged, even though they weren’t getting a regular lunch.

Meals to be Served at Culver Schools This Week

The cafeteria staff at the Culver Community School Corporation has been busy during this spring break to offer children healthy meals.

Carin Clifton, Food Services Director at the Culver schools, said about 10 children a day were served breakfast while up to 25 children took advantage of lunch during last week’s first week of spring break.

Oregon-Davis School Board Votes Against School Lunch Increase

The Oregon-Davis School Board members discussed lunch prices, but Superintendent Greg Briles explained the item to increase prices didn’t need to be on the evening’s agenda.

Briles said he was initially looking at funds in the food service department, and he thought that the board may need to raise the price by five cents and maybe even ten cents. If the board were to consider a five cent increase, it would amount to an additional $876 per year at the elementary level.

Briles said he would be looking deeper internally with commodities and into the corporation’s work with the Northern Indiana Educational Services Center (NIESC) before increasing prices. He noted that there could be more funds to take care of what is needed in the school’s budget.

Healthier Foods to be Served at Schools

The menus are constantly changing at schools to encourage healthier choices.

More vegetables are being offered to students to help improve healthy eating and to tackle child obesity issues. Eastern Pulaski School Superintendent Dr. Robert Klitzman noted that changes were made last school year and more changes are expected on plates this coming school year.
