$500 Grant Awarded to Bella Vita
The local pregnancy resource center, Bella Vita, was graciously awarded a grant of $500 yesterday. Thursday afternoon representatives from the Starke County Community Foundation, Director of Development Sarah Origer and their intern Rachel Lenig as well as the Northern Indiana Community Foundation Executive Director Jay Albert presented the money to Bella Vita representatives, Center Director Sarah Dedloff and Executive Director Lorie Reading. Volunteers Needed for the Starke County Career Success Coalition 4-H Fair Booth
The 4-H fair is scheduled to start soon and the Starke County Career Success Coalition is looking for volunteers willing to help run their booth in the commercial building from 7:30 to 10 pm during fair week, July 13th through the 17th. The objective of the coalition is to provide easier access to higher education to local adults and recent graduates. WKVIdol Contestants Chosen to Perform at 4-H Fair
The stage is set for this year’s WKVIdol competition.
Contestants in the 7-10 category will be Emma Gillard, ReAnnen Cooper, and Emma Hensley. The 11-14 age group will include Tatum Milhiser, Victgoria Horne, and Nathan Jolly. In the 15-18 age group, Hannah Clark, Brianne Barden, Margaret Nagai, Katie Nagai, and Kenzie McDaniel will compete.

WKVIdol Competition Planned During Starke County Fair
WKVI is sponsoring a singing competition for youngsters during the Starke County Fair. WKVIdol will take place Monday, July 14 at 8 p.m. at the fairgrounds. The competition will be divided into three age groups: ages 7-10, 11-14 and 15-18. Each age group will have a maximum of four contestants. The first step for would-be contestants is to submit a 1 minute singing demo with your name, address, email and telephone number. You can drop it off at the station on a compact disc or other digital media file or email an mp3 to wkvidol@wkvi.com. Please list the top three family-friendly songs you would like to perform. Duplicate songs will not be allowed, so the sooner you submit your demo, the greater your chances of getting to sing your favorite song for the competition. Continue reading
Starke County Fair Chamber Wheel Exceeds Fundraising Goal
The chamber prize wheels at the Starke County 4-H Fair proved once again to be popular attractions, raising a combined total of $724 to support the promotion of local businesses. Contestants paid either 50 cents or $1 per spin, with prizes ranging from ink pens, toys and candy to Indiana Beach tickets and refurbished computers. Every spin produced a winner, based on the slot on which the wheel landed. A total of 48 Starke County Chamber of Commerce member businesses donated items for the giveaways. Chamber director Debbie Mix says the fundraiser far exceeded its original goal of $550, thanks to the efforts of nine chamber board members and representatives from six additional chamber members to staff the booth each night of the fair.
Starke County 4-H Fair Officially Opens Today
The Starke County 4-H Fair officially kicks off today at the fairgrounds in Hamlet!
The 4-H club parade begins at 6 p.m. which will be immediately followed by the opening ceremonies in the show arena. The 4-H club and 4-H leader recognitions will be made along with the announcement of fair board scholarships and Junior Leader scholarships. Ten-year members will be recognized and the 4-H Junior Leader Achievement Royalty will be named.
Starke County Junior Leaders Host Food Drive at 4-H Fair
Grab a couple cans of food before you head to the Starke County 4-H Fair this week. Elizabeth Smith with Purdue Extension Starke County says the Junior Leaders are teaming up with the fair board to host a canned food drive. Donations can be dropped off at the fair office, which is across from the dairy barn in the middle of the fairgrounds. All donations will be given to the Community Services of Starke County Food Pantry, and the first 250 people who bring items will get a free ticket to next month’s Indiana State Fair. Smith says that’s a new program the state fair is offering this year. Junior leaders are 4-H members in grades 7 through 12 who work on a variety of community outreach initiatives in addition to their regular 4-H projects.
KVREMC Makes $5000 Donation to 4-H Fairs
Kankakee Valley REMC recently made a donation to the 4-H fairs in Starke and Pulaski counties in the amount of $5000 to assist with the 4-H program and maintenance to the fairgrounds. Amanda Steeb, communications director for KVREMC, said the company is committed to providing these donations each year for the next decade as part of their commitment to the community.
4-H Animal Entries and Shows Planned for the Fair This Weekend
The Starke County 4-H Fair is quickly approaching, with plans to kick off this weekend with a number of 4-H shows.
On Saturday, July 13, the fair begins with open class exhibit entry from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., except for those in the flowers, foods, food preservation and hay and grain classes. At 8 a.m., competitors in the dog shows can enter their canine companions, with the showmanship show planned for 8:30 a.m. and the obedience show at 1 p.m.
Starke County 4-H Fair Comes To an End Tomorrow
The Starke County 4-H Fair is coming to a close after a week of fun, heat, and 4-H success.
The garden tractor pull begins today at 8:30 a.m., Kid’s Day Registration is at 10 a.m. in the Show Arena, the 4-H rocket launch will be at 1 p.m. at the Starke County Airport and the Pet Fun Run is at 2 p.m., sponsored by the Starke County Humane Society.
The fair officially closes tomorrow at 5 p.m. with the Hamlet Fire Department’s truck and tractor pull.
