It’s unusual for the Starke County Highway Department to have nearly all of the materials hauled in for spring and summer operations in January, but Highway Superintendent Rik Ritzler informed the commissioners Monday night that they’re doing just that. With the lack of snow removal efforts this winter, crews have been busy with several other projects to prepare for the summer paving season and completing some minor bridge maintenance work during the down time.

The Marshall County Commissioners reviewed a resolution Monday morning that allows for the sale of equipment to the Starke County Highway Department.
The Starke County Highway Department anticipates more reimbursement funds from the February flooding event to come in from FEMA.

Several training opportunities in October have proved successful for the crews at the Starke County Highway Department. Superintendent Rik Ritzler told the Starke County Commissioners that the snow plow drivers brushed up on skills and new drivers took in new information presented by Mark Ennis of Bliss-McKnight.

Starke County officials hope that recent upgrades to the County Forest will help attract new visitors. County Park Board members and Community Foundation representatives joined Forester Bruce Wakeland, Commissioner Kathy Norem, and several others Wednesday afternoon, to cut the ribbon on the forest’s upgraded access road.
The Pulaski County Highway Department is looking into partnering with WorkOne to get some free labor. As part of a job training program, participants would have the chance to learn skills by working with the Highway Department for a certain period of time, while WorkOne would pay their wages and assume any liability. Similar partnerships have already been put in place with the county’s Maintenance Department, as well as the Starke County Highway Department.
