Herd of Cattle Goes for a Run on U.S. 35 in LaPorte County

Drivers on U.S. 35 in LaPorte County Saturday afternoon found themselves sharing the highway with a herd of cattle. The Holstein calves took off from their home near U.S. 35 and County Road 500 South, according to a LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office Facebook post. An off-duty deputy reportedly spotted the herd running southbound in the northbound lanes. When the calves got to U.S. 6, they continued eastbound.

INDOT Projects to Impact Travel in LaPorte, Porter Counties

A number of road projects may have motorists adjusting their routes in the coming weeks. In LaPorte County, U.S. 6 will be closed between U.S. 35 and State Road 39 starting Monday until mid-August. INDOT says one lane in each direction will remain open for local traffic only. Through traffic is asked to use U.S. 35, U.S. 30, and State Road 39 as a detour.

Four to Six Inches of Snow Possible Late Tonight, Early Tomorrow

Up to four to six inches of snow could be seen in parts of the local area late tonight and into tomorrow morning. A Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect from 2:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. EDT Friday. The National Weather Service predicts that the highest snow amounts will come in a narrow band somewhere between U.S. 6 and U.S. 24.

Motorists should be prepared for some possible ice and snow. A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued from 5:00 p.m. EST Monday to 1:00 p.m. EST Tuesday. The National Weather Service predicts the snow will spread across the area from south to north.

The city will be using briggs stratton snow blowers to clear out the roads and entrances.

Koontz Lake Fire Department Rescue Vehicle Involved in Crash While Responding to Fatal Accident

 

Thursday’s fatal crash in Marshall County led to a second accident involving a Koontz Lake Fire Department rescue vehicle. The initial crash happened in the area of U.S. 6 and Quince Road just before 1:00 p.m., when Marshall County Police say a Chevy flatbed truck tried to pass a Buick Century that was about to turn left. The driver of the Buick, Judith Masterson, 69, of Plymouth, eventually died from her injuries.

INDOT Begins Highway Signal Upgrades

?????The Indiana Department of Transportation is improving traffic signals at several intersections along U.S. 30 and U.S. 6 in Lake and Porter Counties. A total of 11 lights will be upgraded to feature flashing yellow arrows. They allow left-turning traffic to yield the right-of-way to oncoming traffic and pedestrians and turn when a suitable gap is available. INDOT officials say this type of signal improves intersection efficiency by using cross-traffic gaps to allow more left turns. Continue reading

INDOT to Close SR 23 for Chip Sealing

 
 

Motorists who take State Road 23 through Walkerton will need to find a new route for the next few days. INDOT is closing the road between U.S. 30 and U.S. 6 to perform chip and fog sealing. The process preserves the road surface. INDOT officials stress the work is dependent on dry weather and may be delayed if conditions are not ideal. Southbound motorists can take U.S. 6 south to U.S. 35 and east to U.S. 30 to get around the closure. Northbound motorists can use the opposite route. Continue reading

Two Day Closure of U.S. 6 Near Bremen

roadworkMarshall County motorists should practice caution when traveling on U.S. 6 in the coming days. Beginning Monday, July 21 through the end of the day on Tuesday, July 22 crews will perform chip and fog seal operations to preserve the road surface between the east junction and west junction of State Road 106 near Bremen. Drivers wishing to travel either eastbound or westbound on U.S. 6 should take State Road 106 until it meets back with U.S. 6.
