Only law enforcement officers may possess weapons in North Judson-San Pierre School buildings. That is now the corporation’s policy after unanimous action by the school board Tuesday night. Superintendent Lynn Johnson offered her recommendation based on provisions in a new state law.

“No school employee may possess a firearm in a school building, on school property, at a school function or on a bus while on duty as a school employee. Anyone who has a permit can keep it in their car – in their glove compartment or in their trunk locked out of view. That would pertain to school employees,” Johnson said.

“No person with the exception of law enforcement may possess a firearm in a school building, school property, at a school function or on a bus, the same things. That is from Indiana Code, so that would be the recommendation that I would like to make that we don’t allow firearms in the building, even with a permit.”

Johnson says this ensures the safety of everyone at the school.

“A permit isn’t training, and it would be very, very hard to control and monitor what would constitute appropriate training,” Johnson told the board. The policy takes effect immediately. Johnson says she wanted to make sure something was on the books before school starts next month.
