Starke County Voters Invited to Nonpartisan Candidate Forums

Starke County voters can learn where candidates for local office stand on issues during a series of weekend forums. Larry and Deb Wappel are sponsoring the events in Knox, North Judson and Hamlet. She says the candidates will be asked tough questions about things like their leadership philosophy, what sets them apart from others running for the same office and how they will pay for any sort of new program or service they are proposing. The candidates were given the prepared questions in advance. Audience members will also have a chance to submit written questions for the candidates. A bipartisan panel will screen them and make sure they are respectful.

Wappel says voters deserve to know where candidates stand on the issues.

“Every one of these positions are important leadership positions in the community. We also want the candidates to know we have high expectations of them should they be elected,” Wappel said.

She added leadership of both political parties have confirmed their candidates will attend. The first forum will take place this evening at 6 at the Knox High School cafeteria. The next is tomorrow morning at 10 in the auditorium at North Judson-San Pierre High School. The third is tomorrow at 4 p.m. in the Oregon-Davis High School cafeteria.
