Winamac Community High School will be adding a Saturday morning detention next semester.
Eastern Pulaski Superintendent Dan Foster says it will replace the current “School on Wednesday” program. “That’s basically a two-hour detention every Wednesday,” he explains. “We have detention every day at the high school, but the person that’s been doing the extended one on Wednesday has decided not to do that anymore. So the high school leadership team took the opportunity and, through a lot of discussion, we’re actually going to, for the second semester, try a School on Saturday.”
Foster says under the plan approved by the school board last week, the detention will take place every other Saturday, from 8 a.m. to noon. “They will have teachers in there, so hopefully, they’ll be able to give some help and tutoring in certain areas, when it’s possible,” he says. “So hopefully that will be a positive change and maybe a bit of a deterrent to some of the students, of having to get up early and come in on Saturday morning.” He says the school will evaluate the change after the spring semester.
In other business, the school board heard a presentation from members of the Eastern Pulaski Elementary Student Council. Foster said the students shared some of their ideas with board members. “They even talked about making some changes to their track day event at the end of the school year, and they talked about maybe making cookies for bus drivers in the next week,” he says. “So they have some neat ideas, and it’s good to see that program flourish.”
In other business, the school board took its usual steps to balance out the budget at the end of the calendar year.
