The Pulaski County Historical Society’s plans to relocate the county museum got a big boost from a statewide agency. The Indiana Historical Society awarded the county a $50,000 grant. It’s one of several given statewide with funds from Lilly Endowment Inc.
The money will be used to renovate the carriage house on property owned by Don and Dee Galbreath at 500 S. Monticello Street in Winamac into a new museum space.
As a first step in receiving the donated property, the Historical Society and the Galbreaths are working together on a plan that includes the provision of environmental controls, more appropriate space for exhibits, classroom space, garden space, public space and storage.
The Pulaski County Museum is currently located inside the Quonset hut behind the Pulaski County Public Library and is only open on weekends during the summer months. The museum will be open year-round in its new location and will feature a number of rotating themed exhibits focused on local history.
The Pulaski County Historical Society hopes to open the new museum space in late 2017 or early 2018. Updates will be posted online at www.pulaskihistory.net and on the Historical Society Facebook page at www.facebook.com/pulaskihistory.
