Alleged Police Impersonator Arrested

A Valparaiso man has been arrested after allegedly impersonating a police officer at the Kingsbury Fish & Wildlife Area in LaPorte County. Austin Shultz, 20, was arrested Thursday by Indiana Conservation Officers.

He allegedly confronted three teenagers who were fishing near the Kankakee River last Friday night and implied he was a law enforcement officer. Shultz reportedly told the fishermen he was responding on behalf of the DNR to a complaint of someone shooting a high-powered rifle and asked to see their fishing licenses.

DNR officials later said neither the Indiana Conservation Officers Central Dispatch Center nor the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office received a complaint of anyone shooting a high-powered rifle at Kingsbury Fish and Wildlife Area at any time last Friday.

Shultz was taken to the LaPorte County Jail and booked on a charge of Impersonating a Law Enforcement Officer, a level 6 felony.
