Fatal LaPorte County Crash Remains Under Investigation

A South Bend man is dead following an early morning crash on U.S. 20 just west of 300 East in LaPorte County.

Sheriff’s deputies say it happened around 4:50 a.m. when a westbound blue Dodge Avenger crossed the center line and struck a blue Ford F-150 traveling eastbound on U.S. 20.

The driver of the Dodge, 54-year-old Paul Borkowski of South Bend, was killed on impact.

The Ford driver, 51-year-old Joel Lewis of rural LaPorte, was treated for chest pain at LaPorte Hospital. He’s a Tribal Police Officer who is employed by the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians Police Department. Lewis was off-duty when the crash occurred. Both drivers tested negative for alcohol.

Borkowski is the 9th person to die in a traffic crash on U.S. 20 this year, according to the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
