Culver Town Council Discusses Additional Appropriations

The Culver Town Council members held a public hearing this week to hear comments on a proposed additional appropriation ordinance.

Clerk-Treasurer Karen Heim said it was hard to guess what money would be spent toward efforts going for the Stellar Communities Designation Program in 2017 when the budget process was conducted in late fall of 2016.

“At the beginning of the year, we didn’t know whether or not we were going to go for Stellar and we decided that we would go ahead and go for Stellar and incur the costs and see if the clerk’s budget could support it,” explained Heim. “The clerk’s budget isn’t going to support it so we have to go through a process to get permission to spend additional funds. Basically, we’re requesting an additional $17,500 for our Stellar efforts.

The additional appropriation ordinance also includes money for the tree commission.

“The tree commission had some money left over from 2016 that they wanted to spend, but we didn’t have everything in line so that we could encumber funds. We did a similar thing to see if we could support it with the current budget and it’s not going to happen. We’re asking an additional $2,500 for the tree commission.”

Heim noted that there is money in the budget to accommodate the requests. The action just allows the council to spend the money to keep in line with processes required by the Department of Local Government Finance.

There was no public comment given during the hearing.

The council members did unanimously approve the ordinance on first reading.
