North Judson Town Marshal Kelly Fisher came before town council members on Tuesday, seeking permission to turn the police station’s board room into a training site.

Marshal Fisher explained that she hasn’t seen the room utilized for meetings in quite some time. She mentioned that many officers have various instructor qualifications so that unused space is holding some untapped potential.

Fisher said, “We could open it up to host classes and bring some money in for the police department, kind of broaden our training.”

She also suggested making some upgrades to the carpets which date back to the 1990s. Council woman Jane Ellen Felchuck suggested looking into flooring options other than carpeting to cut costs. Fisher said she’s been looking into multiple companies to find the most inexpensive option. She also said they could save money on labor by having police officers complete the renovation work.

Council members seemed to be on board with the idea but certain members expressed concerns, stating that they believed the space is still utilized for Park Board meetings. They encouraged Fisher to contact Park Board officials, and clear it with them before the council makes an official decision on the changes.

Fisher assured members that even if the area was transformed into a training site, it wouldn’t be changed drastically so they could still make it available to individuals who need to use it for meetings. However, Fisher said she will check with the Park Board representatives and report back to the council at the next town council meeting.
