The Starke County Forest may soon offer more winter recreation activities. That’s the hope of Starke County Park Board member Chris Lawrence.
He wants to help bring cross-county skiing and snow biking to the forest. “I would build a groomer, as long as they would give me permission to groom a trail for skiing or biking,” he said during Tuesday’s park board meeting. While the forest is owned by Starke County, it’s managed by Forester Bruce Wakeland, who donated it.
Board members noted that time is running out to make arrangements for this winter. However, Wakeland wasn’t there Tuesday to discuss the idea.
County Attorney Marty Lucas said that didn’t have to stop board members from working on it, though. “You can say what you want to do,” he explained. “I don’t think you’re out of line if you want to take some action on that, at least a proposal about what you want to do.”
Lawrence agreed to put together a more formal proposal, to be shared with Wakeland and discussed at the next meeting. But he said it’s likely that skiing and snow biking at the County Forest would have to wait until next year.
