Second Infant Left in Baby Box in La Porte County

The baby box located at the Coolspring Township Fire Station was used again on Sunday night.

An alarm at the fire department notified firefighters that an infant was dropped off in the baby box. Lt. Chuck Kohler arrived at the station one minute later and found a newborn infant there. LaPorte County EMS and officers from the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department also responded to the alarm. The infant was transported to a Michigan City hospital. According to the report, the infant appeared to be in good health and had no apparent medical issues.

This is the second incident where an infant was left in the baby box in La Porte County. The baby box was installed at the Coolspring Fire Station in April 2016. Indiana does have a safe haven law that allows for a newborn infant to be given up without fear of arrest or prosecution.
