Hamlet Town Council Approves Insurance for Reserve Officers

The Hamlet Town Council has agreed to insure the town’s reserve officers. Under a state law that took effect at the start of the year, municipalities are now responsible for medical expenses, if a reserve officer is injured or gets sick in the line of duty. They also have to pay reserve officers minimum wage for up to 260 weeks, if they’re unable to work their usual job due to that injury.

Clerk-Treasurer Kristina Pitts told council members Wednesday the cost of insurance will be $500 a year, for up to two or three reserves. Council President Dave Kesvormas noted that Hamlet technically only has one reserve officer right now.
