Knox City Council Adjusts Street Sweeping Schedule

The Knox City Council members were tasked with amending the street sweeping route ordinance when they met this week. The existing ordinance stated that during the months of May through September, parking is prohibited on certain streets in town every Tuesday between the hours of 4:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m.

The streets listed include Shield, Main and Pearl Streets from Washington Street to Culver Road and Washington and Lake Streets from Heaton Street to Shield Street. Residents who fail to comply with the ordinance would run the risk of facing a fine and having their vehicle towed.

Mayor Dennis Estok alerted members Tuesday night that the street sweeping service isn’t necessary every week and some residents felt inconvenienced by the requirements.

The Mayor explained, “We’ve had complaints that some of the people on these streets that they would actually move their cars off between the hours and we never come by and sweep.”

Estok went on, “You know, you can’t have these people keep adjusting every Tuesday for something that’s not going to happen. So I left it up to the street superintendent on how many times he needs it.”

Street Superintendent Jeff Borg informed the Mayor that the service is only needed once a month. The mayor recommended amending the street sweeping route ordinance to reflect the Superintendent Borg’s suggestion.

Members voted unanimously to adjust the language to state that vehicles only have to be removed from the aforementioned streets on the third Tuesday of every month. According to the new schedule, the next street sweeping day will be Tuesday, July 17th. If you have any questions, you can contact the Street Department at 574-772-3032.
