La Porte County Sheriff’s Office Investigates Fatal Train and Pedestrian Collision

A fatal train and pedestrian collision that occurred on Saturday is currently under investigation by the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office.

According to a press release, at approximately 12:30 p.m. deputies were dispatched to the South Shore railroad tracks, located near the area of East Bell Avenue and North Cottage Grove Avenue in Hudson Lake. Responding deputies were advised that a train had struck a pedestrian.

Police arrived in the area and began a search. A short time later, a female was reportedly found underneath the fifth train car. The commuter train, number 506, was apparently traveling west and carrying 122 passengers.

The female that was found was identified as a 17-year-old who resides in the area. Emergency personnel removed her from underneath the train and transported her to a nearby helicopter that flew her to South Bend Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Detectives with the Sheriff’s office and the Northern Indiana Transportation District Transit Police returned to the scene to continue the investigation. Late Saturday night, Sheriff’s Office personnel received notification that the 17-year-old female had passed away.
