Hamlet Town Council Schedules Public Hearing for Comprehensive Planning Process

The Town of Hamlet is moving forward with a comprehensive plan. Council member Brian Earnest says town officials have chosen a planning consultant, following several hours of interviews. As the next step in the process, a public hearing has been scheduled for Wednesday, December 12 at 5:00 p.m.

Grant funding is available to cover 90 percent of the cost of the plan, but a public hearing is required before the town may submit its grant application to the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs. Clerk-Treasurer Kristina Pitts says the Kankakee-Iroqois Regional Planning Commission has been helping with the process.

Communities around Starke County are creating or updating comprehensive plans, in preparation for a potential regional Stellar Community application. A Stellar Community designation would likely bring millions of dollars in state funding to the county, through grant opportunities with a smaller local match.

Meanwhile, the Hamlet Town Council has moved its regular meetings up by a week for the month of December. Meetings will be held Wednesday, December 5 and Wednesday, December 19 at 6:30 p.m. at Hamlet Town Hall.
