Knox School Officials, City Look Forward to SRO Presence in Schools

Knox SRO Officer Travis Schieber

A new School Resource Officer (SRO) will begin duties at the Knox Community School Corporation next week.

As previously reported, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Knox Mayor Dennis Estok, Knox Community School Superintendent Dr William Reichhart and Knox City Police Chief Harold Smith on Jan. 17.  It outlines the responsibilities of the role of School Resource Officer.

Officer Travis Schieber has been training with Oregon-Davis School Resource Officer John Kohles this week during school hours.  Knox City Police Chief Harold Smith told the Knox Board of Works members on Wednesday that he’s also helping to get Officer Schieber acquainted with the schools and school officials.

“I took Officer Schieber to all three schools yesterday (Tuesday, Jan. 22) and I introduced him to the principals and vice principals,” said Smith. “They all seemed pretty excited about getting started and getting a SRO in the schools.”

Superintendent Dr. William Reichhart said he will have his marked police car on campus and will have his service weapon with him when he is on active duty at the school.  He added there is SRO training in March that Officer Schieber will attend.

“That’s the next state school safety SRO training for him to attend,” commented Dr. Reichhart.  “I believe he’s going to go.  It’s a week long. I believe Harold is going to go and I think they are going to take one other officer so if Travis is sick there would be another officer that could come in and take his place for the day.”

Officer Schieber will officially begin Monday, Jan 28.
