Winamac High School Athletes Encourage Physical Activity, Leadership with Junior Warrior Day

Inspiring elementary school students to stay active is the goal of the Winamac High School Athletic Leadership Council’s annual Junior Warrior Day. The Eastern Pulaski School Board had a chance to learn more about the effort from Athletic Leadership Council President Jillian Brumm and Vice President Blake Bailey, ahead of last week’s event.

They explained that the high school athletes host groups of elementary school students, divided by grade level. Over a two-hour period, they get to experience five different stations, each lasting about 20 minutes. Four of the stations focus on some type of physical activity, while one is about leadership and what it means to be a good teammate.

Each participant gets a certificate, and the younger kids have the chance to get them signed by the high school students. The council members told the school board that the event helps build relationships between the older and younger students, and seeks to help them develop leadership skills and become more involved.

Athletic Director Bill Ball said the idea for Junior Warrior Day came about three years ago, as the Athletic Leadership Council brainstormed ideas for potential service projects. He said the event has continued to grow, and about 65 elementary school students had signed up for last Saturday’s event.
