Oregon-Davis students’ school day may start a little later next school year. Superintendent Dr. Don Harman says he’s been working on a plan to move the start time from 7:20 to 7:45 a.m.
“I brought a proposal to the board,” he explains. “I’ve talked to many people about starting the school day at 7:45. The board also has given me the charge to look at a schedule for eight o’clock, and then, I need to get some input from parents and patrons.” Harman says a 7:45 a.m. start time would likely mean a 2:45 p.m. dismissal, while if classes start at 8:00, students would probably get out at 3:00 p.m.
He plans to make a formal presentation and recommendation during the school board’s next meeting, which has been scheduled for Monday, June 10. In the meantime, Harman encourages anyone to contact him with any input.
Oregon-Davis officials had looked at adjusting the school start time a couple years ago, citing research suggesting that starting later could lead to better health and improved learning. At the time, the school board decided against it, due to O-D’s proximity to the Eastern Time Zone.
