Yellow River Current Causes Issue for Kayakers

Three kayakers floating on the Yellow River encountered an issue upon nearing an area ¼ mile west of 1100 E. in Starke County Saturday night.

Firefighters from the Washington Township and Bass Lake California Township Fire Departments were called to the scene after learning that a current in the river overtook the vessel and those in the kayak called for help.  Upon arrival, fire officials say a scared woman was in the cold water holding onto a downed tree in the river.  Two men made it to shore.

Firefighters were able to assist the woman safely out of the water with no injuries reported.
