Indiana State Police Warning of Scam Letters Arriving in Mail

Indiana State Police are warning residents to be on the lookout for a scam. Officers say people have been getting letters in the mail, in which someone claiming to be the head of a European bank has found a large amount of money recipients can claim.

The scam typically says a family with your last name has all died in a car crash, and that you may be entitled to money they left behind. Police say this is a scam, and you will end up losing money and possibly your identity, if you respond.

State Police remind residents never to share personal or account information and never to send money to someone with the promise of more money in return. Police also point out that most scammers want you to make a quick decision, so it’s important to talk to someone you trust before responding. Finally, talk to your family about these potential scams, and have a plan in place for when they arrive.
